Appose Mask

'Appose' mask was created as the second mask in a series and addresses the dual functionality of masks. I drew inspiration from the head of an axe and how it can serve as both a tool and a weapon. To contrast this hard dividing edge I decided to give the rest of the mask a more organic texture almost to connote flayed or exposed flesh.

Mourning Mask

‘Mourning Mask’ draws from visual motifs and functions of medieval helmets and facemasks as well as mourning masks or veils. Similar to how a veil shrouds the wearer's face and emotions, ‘Mourning Mask’ also shrouds through its delicate ornate patterning, while it simultaneously connotes a sense of protection, strength and structure through the use of metal. As the piece interacts with the surrounding light, sometimes the wearer's face can clearly be seen behind the metal linkage, and in other circumstances it shadows the deepest recesses of the face.
